Andrew Martínez, a scholar and artist, received his PhD in Culture and Performance from UCLA and his BS in journalism from San José State University. His research areas include dance studies, performance studies, social theory, Latin American studies, prison theatre, ethnography, and phenomenology. His current book project, Bodies in Revolution: a national ballet in Cuba, highlights the Ballet Nacional de Cuba’s participation in the nation-building process of the 1959 Cuban Revolution. He teaches both the Art as Moral Action and Art as Social Action courses with theatre and opera director Peter Sellars. Additionally, he teaches humanities-based writing courses in both the Writing Programs department and the Academic Advancement Program at UCLA.
